LOVE IN THE CHURCH
“A new command I give you; Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” – John 13:34-35

Love as the Church’s Identity
Jesus didn’t say the world would know us by our buildings, programs, or eloquent preaching – but by our love. This love is not just an emotion; it’s a deliberate choice to value, serve, and care for one another. In a world divided by differences, the church (we) should be a living example of unity through love.

With a Love that Reflects Christ
The standard is “as I have loved you.” Christ’s love was sacrificial, patient, forgiving, and unconditional. In the church this would mean:

    Bearing with one another’s weaknesses
“with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love.” – Ephesians 4:2

    Forgiving quickly and fully
“bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive.” – Colossians 3:13

    Serving without expecting recognition
“For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” – Mark 10:45

With a Love that Builds, Not Breaks
Paul reminds us in 1 Corinthians 13 that without love even the most impressive spiritual gifts are meaningless. Pride, division and gossip tear down the body of Christ, but love covers faults, encourages growth, and seeks reconciliation.

With a Love that’s a Witness to the World
When the church truly loves, it becomes a beacon of hope. Outsiders are drawn not by perfection, but by the authenticity of a community that cares deeply for one another. Love is the church’s greatest evangelistic tool.

So, let’s commit to making love the heartbeat of our fellowship this year. This year find tangible ways to show Christ-like love to someone, whether they be in your church, at your place of employment or a stranger at the gas pump; give them a word of encouragement, a helping hand, or a prayer offered in sincerity. Let us be known as Christ’s disciples through the sincerity of the love we show others.
